Kinds of Adverbs; Degrees of Comparison

Adverbs, like adjectives, also have degrees of comparison - positive, comparative, and superlative.

The positive degree expresses a quality without comparison.

Example: The athlete from Baguio City runs fast.

The comparative degree compares two verbs, adjectives, or adverbs.

Example: The athlete from Davao City runs faster than the one from Baguio.

The superlative degree compares three or more verbs, adjectives, or adverbs.

Example: The athlete from Palawan City runs the fastest among the three.

It should be noted that only adverbs of time, degree, and manner have the degrees of comparison.

Adverbs such as now, then, once, here, there, where, why, thus, too, very, before, almost, again, never, ever, etc cannot be compared as they express qualities unsuitable for comparison.
