Concrete Noun

  • The gymnasium is filled with pupils.

  • Each school has a colorful booth.

In the above sentences, the words gymnasium, pupils, school, and booth are nouns whose size, weight, color, and other characteristics can be described. These kinds of nouns are called concrete nouns.

A concrete noun refers to a thing, a person, or a place that is physically present and can be described, seen, heard, touched, and quantified.

Abstract Noun

  • Humility is pleasing to the Creator.

  • Giving a gift is an act of thoughtfulness.

  • Love is God's greatest commandment.

The words humility, thoughtfulness and love cannot be heard or touched. They stand for virtues and values we believe in. These are called abstract nouns.

An abstract noun refers to an idea, a thought, and/or a quality or characteristic.
