Subject and Predicate

A sentence has two parts:

  • subject
  • predicate

The subject is the one talked about in a sentence.

The predicate tells something about the subject.

Examples:

  • Cardell sees a lonely girl under the mango tree in the school playground.
  • He works in a newspaper publishing house.

In the first sentence, one part tells who is talked about - Cardell. This part of the sentence is called the subject.

In the second part of the sentence, what does Cardell do? Sees. This part of the sentence is called the predicate.

In the second sentence, the subject is he as it is the one that is talked about.

The predicate is works as it tells us something about the subject.
