Interrogative, Demonstrative, and Relative Pronouns

Relative pronouns introduce a group of words or a part of a sentence that describes or tells about a person or a thing.

The relative pronouns are:

  • Who
  • Whom
  • Whose
  • That
  • Which

Use who for the name/s of person/s used as the subject in a sentence.

Example:
The woman who came is my thoughtful mother.

Use whom for the name/s of person/s used as the object of a verb or a preposition in a sentence.

Example:
They were my relatives whom the host recognized.

Use whose for the name/s of person/s or thing/s to show ownership in a sentence.

Example:
This is my sister whose book is missing.

Use which for animals or things.

Example:
The dog, which is a crowd favorite, was trained by a Filipino.

Use that for persons, animals, or things.

Example:
My father gave me the gift that I had been wishing for.
