Interrogative, Demonstrative, and Relative Pronouns

The pronouns used in asking questions are called interrogative pronouns. They are:

  • What
  • Who
  • Whose
  • Whom
  • Which

They are also called question words.

The following tells you how each question word or interrogative pronoun is used.

What is used when asking for a thing, an event, or an idea.

Example:
What does the doctor prescribe?

Who, whom, and whose are used to refer to person/s.

  • Who refers to the subject of the sentence.

Example:
Who is your doctor?

  • Whom refers to the object or receiver of the action.

Example:
To whom did you give the medicine?

  • Whose shows possession.

Example:
Whose medicine is this?

Which is used for both persons and things.

Examples:
Which of these fruits will you choose for the patient?
Which nurse will bring the medicines?
