Comparing Adjectives

The comparative degree is formed by:

1. Adding -er to one-syllable adjectives

Examples:

  • tall - taller
  • short - shorter

2. Adding -r to one-syllable adjectives that end in -e

Examples:

  • brave - braver
  • fine - finer

3. Writing the last consonant twice and then adding -er for adjectives with a single short vowel ending in a single consonant

Examples:

  • big - bigger
  • fat - fatter

4. Changing y to i then adding -er to adjectives that end in -y

Examples:

  • funny - funnier
  • busy - busier
